Biography

In recounts of her mother, around age two, joyjii started to talk, and let her parents know she urgently needed a violin. At age five, finally tall enough to hold the smallest one, she started playing. Two years into it, two violin teachers and one piano lesson later, she decided to continue playing, but never to take lessons anymore- to be careful not to possibly destroy her love for music. Notes didn’t make sense, but the music and the melodies carry stories that worked well enough for her to remember patterns. She just played. The piano standing in the living room, flutes, harmonica… whatever was available that made sounds. If there wasn’t any instrument, she would build one, out of kitchen tools, sing or whistle, or just listen to the music she heard inside. At some point her best friend started playing the drums, and so did she. At age thirteen joyjii and her family moved to the city. For an apartment complex and no practice room the drums were too loud, so she picked up the guitar. Shortly after she found a practice room for the drum set, and a good friend who wanted to learn to play them, so she showed him how, brought the guitar, and already the first band was born! This was fun, but didn’t last very long. All through her life joyjii moved often and traveled a lot, so the guitar became her constant companion. While living in California 2004-2009, performing at some open mics, everyone told her they wanted to hear her voice. Since she could never find a song she could truly identify with, she finally started writing her own. 2010-2014, after moving back to Switzerland she recorded her first album „opening“, with three different sound technicians until she finally found Marc Ysenschmid in Zürich with whom she muscled the 18 songs through in only 3 month time. Life circumstances required getting this done in a short time- and it was- crowned with a cd release show at the Mambo Cafe in Zürich. A day later joyjii travelled back to live in California again. The big fires of 2015 then burned the area down where she and her ex-husband lived, and now she’s back in Switzerland, working on a whole new set and experience of tunes to be released within reasonable time.
